Back and leg pain from a disc
Ayurvedic treatment for disc bulge and sciatica in Dubai at Vaidika Ayurvedic Centre is planned around your diagnosis, not a fixed package. A disc bulge, often called a slip disc, can press on a nerve in the lower back and cause sciatica: pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the buttock down the leg. Our centre opposite Deira City Centre is opening soon, and every plan will start with a consultation with a DHA-licensed Ayurvedic doctor.
Your MRI report and your doctor’s advice matter
Disc problems vary widely, and the right approach depends on what the scan shows and how your nerves are affected. Before recommending any therapy, the doctor will review your MRI or X-ray reports and any advice from the doctor already treating your spine, so please bring them with you.
Some disc problems need surgical review or urgent investigation. If the assessment suggests this, the doctor will tell you plainly and advise you to see the appropriate specialist before, or instead of, starting Ayurvedic therapy.
Conditions we help manage
- Lumbar disc bulge, protrusion or slip disc
- Sciatica and radiating leg pain
- Lower back pain and stiffness after a disc injury
- Recurring flare-ups of back and leg pain
For neck discs and arm pain, see our page on neck pain. For general back and joint pain, see pain and joint care.
Your first consultation
Every treatment begins with a consultation that includes a personalised physical assessment (including how you walk, bend and how your legs feel), a Prakriti assessment of your constitution, Nadi Pariksha (the traditional pulse examination), and lifestyle and dietary counselling covering sitting, lifting, driving and sleep.
How Ayurvedic treatment for disc bulge and sciatica in Dubai works
Depending on your diagnosis and how you feel on the day, a plan may include:
- Kati Vasti: warm medicated oil held over the lower back inside a ring of dough
- Elakizhi and Njavara Kizhi: warm herbal poultices applied over the back, hips and legs
- Abhyanga: medicated oil massage, adjusted to avoid aggravating nerve pain
- Pizhichil: continuous pouring of warm medicated oil, used where stiffness is widespread
- Vasti: medicated enemas, regarded in Ayurveda as a principal procedure for conditions of the spine, given only where the doctor considers them appropriate within a Panchakarma programme
- Internal Ayurvedic medicines prescribed by the doctor
- Therapeutic yoga, introduced gradually once acute pain settles, with movements chosen for your diagnosis
These therapies may help with relief from pain and stiffness and support a gradual return to normal activity. If any therapy increases your leg pain or numbness, it is stopped and the doctor reviews the plan.
Working alongside your medical care
Ayurvedic care at Vaidika works alongside your existing medical care, including physiotherapy, pain management and any surgical follow-up. Please do not stop prescribed medicines. Your treating doctor’s advice comes first, and our doctor will plan around it.
When to see a doctor urgently
Go to an emergency department straight away if you have:
- loss of bladder or bowel control, or new difficulty passing urine
- numbness around the genitals, buttocks or inner thighs
- leg weakness that is getting worse, foot drop, or new difficulty walking
- sciatica in both legs at the same time
- back pain with fever, or after a significant fall or accident
- severe pain that keeps getting worse despite rest and pain relief
- unexplained weight loss, or back pain with a past history of cancer
What a programme looks like
Programmes commonly run for 7, 14 or 21 days, with sessions of 45 to 90 minutes, and the doctor reviews you during the course. From opening day, sessions run 10:00 to 22:00, seven days a week. The centre is opposite Deira City Centre, about two minutes from Deira City Centre Metro (Red Line). If you are travelling from Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi or Oman for a course, our guide to planning Ayurvedic treatment in Dubai from outside the city may help.
Some UAE insurance plans cover Ayurvedic care, and we check cover with your insurer before treatment begins. Request an appointment or message us on WhatsApp, and have your MRI report ready to share.

Questions about disc bulge and sciatica
Can Ayurveda help with a disc bulge?
Therapies such as Kati Vasti, Kizhi and Vasti are traditionally used in the management of back and leg pain linked to disc problems, and may help with relief from pain and stiffness. We do not promise changes on a scan. The doctor will review your MRI and explain what is realistic for you.
Do I need an MRI before starting?
Bring any MRI or X-ray reports you have. If you have not had a scan and your symptoms are significant, the doctor may ask you to arrange one through your treating doctor before therapy begins.
Surgery has been suggested to me. Can I try Ayurveda instead?
Please discuss this with the doctor who recommended surgery. Ayurvedic care is not a substitute for surgery where it is needed, and our doctor will not advise you to go against your surgeon's or treating doctor's advice.
Should I stop painkillers or physiotherapy?
No. Ayurvedic care works alongside your existing medical care and physiotherapy. Do not stop prescribed medicines, and tell the Ayurvedic doctor everything you take.
How long is a sciatica programme?
Programmes commonly run for 7, 14 or 21 days, with sessions of 45 to 90 minutes. Long-standing problems may need a longer course, which the doctor will discuss with you.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Some UAE insurance plans cover Ayurvedic care. We check cover with your insurer before treatment begins.
